Community Involvement:

Sonia is very passionate about giving back to her community. She currently serves as the Planning Commissioner for the City of Milpitas. She enjoys being involved in the growth and development of her City. For over 10 years Sonia and her husband Sedrick coached and managed their daughter’s little league soccer teams. They also contribute financially by sponsoring soccer backpacks, paying registration fees, uniforms, and sports equipment for team members in need of financial assistance.

This inspired Sonia to start the Joseph Bettencourt Foundation to honor her son Joseph’s memory. This foundation is intended to pay the cost of sports programs, uniforms, and equipment for underprivileged kids living in the Bay Area. Joseph was an outstanding athlete at every sport he played. He first started playing soccer when he was 3 years old. He went on to play at a competitive level until he was in high school.

In October 2018 Joseph was in a skateboarding accident, skating down the foothills in Milpitas. He wasn’t wearing a helmet or any safety gear. He suffered from traumatic brain injury and after 8 days in the hospital and two major surgeries Joseph was pronounced dead at the age of 24. Not only was Joseph an outstanding athlete he was an amazing street artist, he loved music, drawing, and painting, his artist name is Cose or Cosey- Family and friends celebrate Joseph’s beautiful soul for his birthday in November with a Skate 4 Cosey Day at the local skate park.
